SCONUL Access Scheme - Applying for access to other libraries

Most Birkbeck students are entitled to use many other academic libraries through the SCONUL Access scheme. In the past, it was necessary to get a paper SCONUL card to take with you to other libraries, but these are no longer issued.

To apply for SCONUL Access you should now visit www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access and apply online. You will receive an email confirmation which you can show to gain access to or to join other libraries that are in the scheme.

To get SCONUL access you must have a clear library record, with no overdue items or fines. If you have any questions please contact the Library Help Desk.

Library system upgrade - 21st August

We will be having a small upgrade to the library management system (Horizon) on Wednesday 21st August. We expect the work to begin at 14.00 (it is being done from Utah!) and should take about 4 hours.

During this time it will be possible to borrow items at the Issue Desk only. Any returned items will be kept aside and dealt with when the work is completed. Self-service, requests and renewals will not be possible. The standard catalogue will be down as it too is having an upgrade. VuFind will be available but no item details will be shown and readers will not be able to access their accounts.

We hope that all being well we will be back online by the early evening, but we are advising that disruption may continue into Thursday.

No fines are being charged on these days and no items should be due back. We will issue updates via the Library web site and our Twitter feed (@BirkbeckLibrary).

Introducing Warc, our new marketing database

The library has taken out a subscription to a new database called Warc, formerly known as the World Advertising Research Centre, which should give you a better idea of what it is all about. Warc specialises in advertising, marketing and media communications.

There are over 25,000 articles, case studies, in-depth trend analysis, marketing strategy, marketing campaign videos and research reports to be found, coming from various sources including Warc's own publications: AdmapMarket Leader,International Journal of AdvertisingJournal of Advertising Research and International Journal of Market Research.

This database will appeal mainly to people researching advertising and marketing, but it also has information that may appeal to other social science researchers as it covers things like government and non-profit campaigns.

You can access Warc here: http://www.bbk.ac.uk/lib/elib/databases/social/warc
